Bridge

A technology that connects two different blockchain networks, enabling transfer of assets or data between them.

A Bridge is a blockchain technology that enables assets, data, or messages to move between two otherwise incompatible networks. Bridges play a crucial role in multi-chain ecosystems, allowing users to transfer tokens or interact with applications across different blockchains.

Because blockchains operate independently, bridges act as connectors that expand liquidity, utility, and interoperability.

How Blockchain Bridges Work

While designs vary, bridges generally follow this process:

Lock: The original asset is locked or escrowed on Chain A.

Mint: A corresponding asset is minted or released on Chain B.

Burn/Unlock: When the user returns assets, the wrapped tokens are burned and the original ones are unlocked.

This approach maintains supply consistency across chains.

Types of Bridges

1. Trusted Bridges Run by centralized entities or a small set of validators. Faster but rely on trust assumptions.

2. Trustless Bridges Rely on smart contracts and algorithms instead of centralized custodians.

3. Token Bridges Transfer assets across chains (e.g., ETH ↔ BNB Chain).

4. Data Bridges Transmit information, enabling cross-chain smart contract execution.

5. Sidechain Bridges Connect a main chain (like Ethereum) to a sidechain or Layer-2.
